The department of physics of Bihar National College was established in the year 1950 with the introduction of Intermediate and undergraduate teaching in science. Since its inception the department is well known for its high standard of teaching and research. The department of physics is one of the oldest centres of undergraduate and research in state. Our students have been doing exceptionaly well in the annual examinations and they secure top ranks in the University. The faculties of the department inspire the students to develop a keen interest in Science. Their experimental and analytical skills are nurtured continuously. They are also encouraged to participate in national level examinations such as JAM, JEST, CUSET, etc. They are also mentored rigorously. As a result, a substantial number of students qualify these examinations. Several of our alumni are actively engaged in research in theoretical and experimental Physics in various national institutes viz IIT, NIT, IISc, Central Universities, etc and abroad. A large number of eminent scholars have been associated with this department since its inception. There are currently four permanent and three guest faculties in the department. All of them are engaged in teaching and research. They published several research papers in national and International journal of high standard. Our dedicated faculty members continuously strive to uphold the value of higher education. Dr. Baidyanath Prasad, Dr. A. K. Rakshit, Dr. B. K. Guha, Dr. S. M. Karim, Dr. Vishwanath Prasad, Dr. Dileep Gupta, Dr. Bakshi Vidyanand Sinha, Dr. Deo Mukherjee, Dr. Kashi Nath and Dr. Jai Prakash Saha served as the head of physics department. Currently, Dr. Dinesh Kumar is the head of the department. There are laboratries for Electronics, Optics, and General Physics. The Department has a rich Library with more than 5000 books. The areas of research in which faculties are currently working are :

(2) Plasmonics and metamaterials.
(3) Semiconductor Physics.
(4) Material Science
(5) Computational Nanomagnetism.
