The Department of Mathematics, B. N. College Patna was established in 1889, since the inception of the college. The department has its own glorious past.

Some of the former head and teachers of the department were Prof. W. C. Dutta, Prof. Lala Mukund Murari Pd., Prof. Radha Mohan Pd., Prof. Kamal Krishna Pd., Prof. Lalji Pd., Prof. T. K. Jha, Prof. G. N. Sahay, Prof. Vinay Kumar Kantha, Prof. B. G. Prasad. The department is presently functioning under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Shashi Bhushan Rai. Recently, Dr. Abhishek Kumar Sharma has joined the department as an assistant professor.

Main aim of the department is to impart teaching to undergraduate students of Honours and subsidiary level in both Arts and Science faculty. The syllabus prescribed by the Patna University is strictly followed. The department has a rich library of its own. Students are prepared for doing best in the University exam and other competitive exams.

The department regularly organizes co-curricular activities like quiz competition, exhibition, Fresher’s party and Farewell cum Prize distribution function, etc. Also, parent-teacher meetings are regularly organized to keep a better record of the progress of our students.

The BCA department also functions under the Department of Mathematics and runs a three year vocational course in B. Sc. / B. A. in Computer Application. Every year 30 students are admitted in each of the courses. The graduated students of BCA department are well placed in industry and academia.

Students of the department excel in university examination and many of them secure top ranks. In the academic session 2017-18, Mr. Shashi Ranjan Sinha (B. Sc. Honours in Mathematics) and Mr. Anand Prakash (B. A. Honours in Mathematics) of the college were Gold Medalist of the Patna University. Ms. Kalindi was Gold Medalist and Ms. Bharti was second topper in the academic session 2014-15.

Students having Honours Degree in Mathematics have tremendous opportunities in the field of higher education and research in the core area of Mathematics.

Structure of the Course: The duration of B. Sc. / B. A. Honours programme is three years. The course content includes all the major areas of mathematics such as Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Numerical Analysis, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Integral and Differential Calculus, Set Theory, Statics and Dynamics, Linear Programming Problem, etc.
